South County Park Assessment

The Parks and Community Services Department is partnering with Santa Cruz County Parks and County Park Friends to conduct an assessment of all Watsonville City parks and five County parks located in South Santa Cruz County. The City recently hired Callandar Associates to provide assessments and field review, proposed improvements, estimate of improvements costs and priority for implementation of improvements at each of the specified Park facilities.

The intent of this study is to inventory and examine each Park and determine when systems will need to be replaced. The assessment study will include the examination of the features, amenities, hardscape, landscape, electrical, and irrigation systems which are key to keeping these Park facilities safe and functioning. This study will also identify park enhancements desired by the community.

The study will result in a Park Facility Assessment Report that will include priorities for funding. This will be used to develop a system-wide Park Improvement and Equity Plan for maintaining, renovating, and ultimately replacing facilities.

Parks and Recreation Strategic Plan

In 2019, the City of Watsonville Parks and Community Services Department worked with Verde Design to lead a community input process to develop the Department's Strategic Plan and park master plans for the City Plaza and Ramsay Park. A comprehensive community input process was used to create the 2020 Parks and Recreation Strategic Plan that identifies priorities for the Parks and Community Services Department for the next 5-10 years. The Strategic Plan serves as an action plan and update to the 2009 Parks and Recreation Master Plan.

Watsonville City Plaza Expansion and Revitalization Project

Through the planning process described above, a community driven Master Plan for the City Plaza has been created. The City received a $3.4 million Prop 68 Grant through the State of California's Department of Parks and Recreation to fund this project. Design work will begin soon, with construction beginning mid to late 2023. In the meantime, City staff are working towards installing a permanent restroom in the Plaza that will open mid-2022.
