[ARCHIVED] Nearly 100 citations issued during special traffic enforcement operation

Surrender to what is. Let go of what was. Have faith in what will be.

More than a dozen motor officers from across Santa Cruz County made their way to Watsonville, where they handed out 91 citations during a special traffic enforcement operation on Wednesday, April 17.

The operation was part of the BADGES (Before Aggressive Drivers Get Everyone Stopped) program, which aims to improve road traffic safety. The countywide program has been running strong for about 20 years with the help of several law enforcement agencies.

Once a month, motorcycle officers will go to a city in Santa Cruz County to help with enforcement efforts in that particular community.

“Each city has its own different issues,” explained Watsonville Police Sergeant Donny Thul. “Here in Watsonville we focus on the pedestrian and bicycle violations because that’s where we have the most fatalities occurring in our city.”

While BADGES brings together traffic officers from Scotts Valley, Santa Cruz, Capitola, Watsonville, and CHP-Santa Cruz, it also allows the agencies to “tap into different resources and if somebody is having an issue we’re able to help solve those together,” Sgt. Thul said.
