[ARCHIVED] Your Guide to Fireworks Safety and Regulations in Watsonville

Nearly 1,000 pounds of illegal fireworks out on display at the police department

As we get closer to the Fourth of July, it's important to remember that while fireworks may be festive, illegal fireworks are dangerous and disruptive. They pose serious fire hazards, cause injuries, and can be traumatic for pets, veterans, and community members.

Illegal Fireworks Will Cost You

The Watsonville Police and Fire Departments are taking a zero-tolerance approach to illegal fireworks this year.

  • $1,000 fine per violation
  • Citations can be issued even without officers on site
  • Our Drone Team is actively monitoring neighborhoods

Report Fireworks Using Our Mobile App

Help us protect the community by reporting illegal fireworks through the Watsonville Police Department mobile app, which is available on Apple and Android devices.

New features include:

  • A dedicated "Fireworks" reporting option
  • Ability to submit photos
  • Option to stay anonymous

You can also call 831-471-1151 to report.

Only call 9-1-1 if the fireworks pose an immediate danger to people or property.

Please include:

  • Exact location
  • Type of fireworks (ground or aerial)
  • Any visible hazards

What's Illegal?

If it does any of the following, it's not allowed in Watsonville:

🚫 Shoots into the air and explodes
🚫 Makes a loud, explosive sound
🚫 Doesn't have th"Safe and Sane" seal from the California State Fire Marshal

Safe and Sane Fireworks: What You Need to Know

Only "Safe and Sane" fireworks are permitted in Watsonville, and they must be purchased from vendors the City officially authorizes.

  • Sales are allowed from 9AM on July 1st to 10PM on July 4th
  • Use is allowed from July 1st through midnight on July 5th — only within city limits
  • You must be 18 or older to light fireworks

Fireworks Safety Tips

  • Always read and follow directions
  • Have a responsible adult present at all times
  • Use fireworks outdoors, away from dry grass or flammable materials
  • Light one at a time and move back quickly
  • Keep a bucket of water or a hose nearby
  • Clean up all debris after use

Help Keep Pets Safe

Fireworks can be frightening for animals. Take these steps to protect your pets:

  • Keep them indoors in a quiet, secure space
  • Make sure ID tags and microchip information are up to date
  • Use calming music or white noise to reduce stress
  • Provide toys, treats, and blankets for comfort

Let's work together to make this 4th of July safe, respectful, and enjoyable for everyone in Watsonville.

Be safe. Be smart. Report illegal fireworks.
