The Watsonville Municipal Airport has been selected as one of just 16 airports in California to serve as a satellite airport for Super Bowl travel. The designation places Watsonville among a small group of airports supporting increased air traffic tied to one of the biggest sporting events of the year.
This is not the first time the airport has played this role. During the 2016 Super Bowl, Watsonville Municipal Airport welcomed aircraft from across the country in the days leading up to the game.
“Serving as a satellite airport gives us the opportunity to support the flying public while introducing visitors from around the country to both our city and our airport,” said Nicholas Hernandez, Airport Operations Specialist at Watsonville Municipal Airport. That activity led to increased fuel sales and landing fees, and a positive economic impact that extended beyond the airport to local hotels, transportation services, and other businesses.
In preparation for this year’s event, airport staff have been coordinating closely with the Federal Aviation Administration to manage arrivals and departures. During the Super Bowl travel period, the airport will assign time slots for incoming and outgoing aircraft to ensure safe and efficient operations.
The airport is expecting a wide range of aircraft, from single-engine planes to multi-engine private jets. To support this activity, the airport will provide 24-hour operations, security, and fueling services in the days leading up to the game. Additional equipment and services have also been added to accommodate aircraft that are not part of the airport’s typical daily traffic.
“Our team is working around the clock to coordinate arrivals, manage ramp space, and make sure every aircraft has the services it needs,” Hernandez said. “It’s a big team effort that takes planning, coordination, and a lot of behind-the-scenes work.
Beyond airport operations, the increased activity is expected to benefit the local economy. Landing fees and fuel sales generate direct revenue for the airport, while visiting crews and passengers contribute to demand for rental cars, ride-sharing services, hotel stays, and local restaurants and shops.
Airport staff are focused on ensuring a smooth experience for pilots and passengers while showcasing Watsonville as a welcoming and well-prepared community. As visitors arrive from near and far, the airport once again plays a key role in connecting Watsonville to a national audience during one of the most high-profile events of the year.
