[ARCHIVED] Watsonville Fire Department shares kitchen safety tips for Thanksgiving

FD kitchen safety

It’s that time of year when fire departments across the country see an increase in home-cooking fires, especially on Thanksgiving.

So keeping fire safety top of mind in the kitchen during this joyous but hectic time is important!

Here are some safety tips to keep yourself and your family safe.

  • Never leave the kitchen while cooking on the stovetop. Some types of cooking need continuous attention.

  • When cooking a turkey, remain at home and check it regularly.

  • Use timers to keep track of cooking times.

  • Keep things that can catch on fire at least 3 feet from the cooking area.

  • Avoid wearing long sleeves and hanging fabrics.

  • Always cook with the lid beside your pan. If you have a fire, slide the lid over the pan and turn off the burner. Do not remove the cover because a fire could start again. Let the pan cool for a long time, and never throw water on the fire.

  • For an oven fire, turn off the heat and keep the door closed. Only open the door once you’re confident the fire is completely out. If you have any doubts or concerns, contact the fire department.

  • And lastly, the National Fire Protection Agency strongly discourages turkey fryers, as they can lead to severe burns, injuries, and property damage.

  • Evite usar mangas largas y telas colgantes.
